3 Β· Row-by-row weaving instructions
First time weaving? Read the step-by-step tutorial below β first β this chart is your reference while you weave.
π‘ Weave from Row 1 (bottom) upwards, following each arrow's direction. For colour blocks, wind a small "butterfly" of each yarn and work each block back and forth (tapestry style) β at coaster size you can also simply carry colours across the back. Yarn lengths include ~30% take-up.
Look what you can make
Every coaster below started as spare yarn on the Little Loomi. Tap any one to load it into the Pattern Studio and get the step-by-step instructions.
How to weave your first coaster
Never woven before? Follow these 7 steps. Once you've got the rhythm, just read your chart above row by row.
Warp the loom
Hook the warp string onto a top notch, run it straight down to the matching bottom notch and back up β like lacing a shoe β until all the vertical threads are tight and evenly spaced. These verticals are your warp.
Thread your needle
Cut about an arm's length of yarn and thread the wooden needle. This working yarn is your weft β the colour that shows in the finished coaster.
Weave over, under, overβ¦
Starting at the bottom row, take the needle over the first warp thread, under the next, over the next⦠all the way across. This simple in-and-out is plain weave.
Flip it on the next row
On the way back, do the opposite: where you went over last row, go under this time. Alternating every row is what locks the weave together.
Pack each row down
After each row, use the weaving comb to gently push the yarn down against the row below. Snug, even rows make a neat, sturdy coaster.
Follow your chart & change colours
Read your chart from Row 1 at the bottom, following the arrows (β β). To change colour, drop the old yarn and start the new one β leave a short tail at the back to weave in later.
Finish & remove your coaster
At the top, gently lift the warp loops off the loom. Tie the loops in pairs to secure the edge, weave in any loose tails, and trim the fringe. Done β your first coaster!
π‘ Beginner's secret: keep the edges relaxed. Don't pull the weft tight across the row, or the coaster will pinch in at the sides ("hourglass"). Let each row arch up a little before you pack it down.
